Wildlife at the Sailing Club
We must have one of the most beautifully situated
sailing clubs in the world, and we are very lucky to have such a
variety of wildlife within a 5 minutes walk from the car park.
Wildlife can, however, be dangerous. If you have
any questions while you are at the club ask Patrick and/or other
people at the club.
Below are some ideas how to keep out of trouble.
Dangerous animals:
All animals should be given enough space not to feel threatened-
even Water Buck can be aggressive.
Hippo- Very aggressive if they feel threatened.
They can run as fast as a galloping horse and will kill.
• Keep a distance of at least 200+ yards on the open riparian
land, and be wary.
• Do not get between the Hippo and the water.
• Avoid thick bush that is known Hippo habitat.
• The Hippo use the paths beneath the club house; be very
careful.
• Swimmers go nowhere near a hippo.
• Sailors, remember the wind can die on you and hippos seem
incensed by the flapping sail.
• Find sanctuary if fighting males are anywhere near your
tent at night.
Hippos grazing at night have only very rarely been known to trouble
campers. Staying very quiet seems to be the secret to a good if
nervous night’s sleep.
Hippo Sailing Club habitat include:
• 150 yards to the right of the main jetty in the water and
the heavy bush opposite.
• Trees circling the island from the car park to the pump.
• They are easily seen on the riparian land.
• In the bush between Mike Higgins’s smart new gate
and the Lake Hotel.
• On the paths below the club house in all directions.
• Near the little jetty below the ‘Ladies loo’.
Buffalo- Very aggressive. Seen a couple of months
ago.
• Go nowhere near them. Extremely dangerous.
Habitat include the bush between the gate and the Lake Hotel
Giraffe- Have rarely been a problem but have been known to have
caused damage. It is a good idea to be circumspect.
Children, your guests and new members must be made aware
of these requirements to help ensure our safety.
Please enjoy our unique habitat.
