SUNDAY 27th OCTOBER – MONTHLY HANDICAP

The grass on the Island is spreading really well and very green right now.

There was a good turn out again. We had 3 Fireballs and 10 Lasers. The Fireballs missed the first race, but were ready for the good winds in race two and three.

Welcome: to Gary and Michele Barlow and their son, Stuart. Gary got re-acquainted with a Laser and sailed all three races. Also welcome to Karen Glisson, a newcomer to Kenya, who sailed another Club Laser and managed the strong winds with aplomb, finishing well up in the fleet. ~Gary and Karen are also keen to crew on Fireballs. Also good to see Alexi Russell on the water sailing two up with her visitor, Sally and really enjoying the wind judging by the whoops and shrieks coming from their direction. Congratulations to Yves Horent who came into his own with the strong wind and finished 1st on Handicap! and 1st on the water! And Colin Ball close behind and 2nd on the water.
Lara (12 years old) was helming the Fireball with her father, Nicolas, as Crew and Don was introducing Rob Macaire to the joys of Fireball crewing. Graham Alder and Daniel Szlapak made up the Fireball fleet but a shroud broke putting them out of competition after the 2nd race.

The first race was light wind starting at no.9 and going to Middle and 7, Then the wind livened and changed direction and the 2nd race was much, much faster using No.8 Middle, and 6 and 7 in various combinations, leading to some confusion as not everyone was checking the Flags!!!! Then in for a delicious lunch of soup, salads, and cheese and fruit salad. Back on the water by 2.45 and the wind blew even stronger with some flying jibes. Marks were 7, Middle, 9 and almost kiteflying runs from 9 to middle. And it was a lovely sunny day!!

Many Thanks to John Wheeler (nice to see him back on the Island), and Moses for their organization and to our Rescue crew, who were more than ready on the yellow inflatable, but did not have to come to anyone’s rescue.

RESULTS: were computerised by Nicolas, collated from John’s records, and are attached for you to see.

Naivasha Laser Closed 2008 Result

Saturday 27th September: Georges Diener, a new member, Cilla White and Nicolas Granier were at the Club to help anyone who wanted sailing tips! Jeremy Notley benefitted!! Some Hillcrest School students came with their teacher, Adrian Bennet to check their boats, and sailed independently. There was activity! and a good wind, I hear in the afternoon which is more than those below got at any time during the Sunday Event!!!

Sue Deverell as OOD along with Moses did their best to source the breeze and managed to lay courses that were navigable. We had a few puffs, but nothing really exciting! However, it was a fun event and a test of technique when sailing a Laser.
The results complied by Nicolas, are below. Thanks to Sue's time keeping this also counted as the September Handicap which as you can see was won by CILLA and NICOLAS.

It was good to welcome Taryn and Jenny back on the water, although for only one morning race as they were accompanied by Joachim, and babies and had to get back for bath and feed time!! Well done Taryn for winning the first race despite not having sailed FOR MONTHS, as she has been busy with her new baby, Aneke. Also welcome to Yves Horent ex-Dar. He finds our Naivasha wind difficult to fathom- but will soon get the hang of it.
Many thanks to Sue Deverell and Moses for their excellent organisation of the racing. Very much appreciated by all the sailors.

Kilifi 2008 Result

Sailing at Kilifi was superb this year. The cadets first had 3 days of training from Chris Childs – including sailing in the sea beyond the creek entrance and learning how to cope with large waves (in a tiny Oppie!), and then competed for three more days. The Fireballs comprised a select fleet of 6 boats but included travelling sailors Al Bush from Dar Es Salaam and Andrew Woodrow from Copenhagen, and had 3 days of very competitive and exciting sailing. The Lasers then took to the lagoon for 3 days with 15 entries including many from Mombasa and one from Dar Es Salaam. Reports from the fleets will be sent out shortly.

Fireball training day – The day started with a small introduction to the Mountain Club and all the other beginner crews, followed by basic instructions on shore about flying the jib, spinnaker and using a trapeze. We then went sailing for the rest of the day, with strong winds in the morning, perfect for using the trapeze and lighter winds in the afternoon, perfect for spinnaker tries. We had 6 fireballs on the water, swapping on enthusiastic beginner crews (there were about 15 participants). It was a brilliant day enjoyed by all and we received a huge thank you from the Mountain club, and I would like also to say thanks to all the instructors for their time and expertise and for the use of people’s boats.

Rex Higgins was a mix-in with 4 helms [Don White, Chris Shaw, Graham Alder and Gray Bush] and a number of crews moving from boat to boat to accommodate them [ it was the day after the Mountain Club visit and some stayed on to sail]. There were 5 races : Don and Gray won the first 3 - then the teams changed and Don and Graham won the next 2. So Don + Others were the winners!

Three of a Kind at Kisumu - 11 entries. 4 boats from NYC [3 Fireballs (see below) and 1 laser sailed by Rachel Cintron) and Sarah Searle from Uganda
1st - G Bush and A Bush
2nd - Don White and S Patel
